4 BITTER TRUTHS ABOUT ENERGY DRINKS
They look so cool on shopshelves. You are convinced they supplement the energy you lost after physical activities. But are energy drinks really delivering on their promises?
CAFFEINE-SUGAR KICKS:
Energy drinks have a very high content of caffeine and sugar that make you feel fresh and energised. Too much caffeine can make you jittery, up your heartbeat, and disturb your sleeping pattern. Also, even though the sugar provides a burst of energy, watch out for a phenomenon called ‘sugar crush’ – when this energy wears off. This makes one feel tired all over again. So, they are definitely not meant for sporting activities. And the presence of quinine, that’s used in drinks for giving them the fizz, is bad for the bones. Further, the high sugar content can lead to weight gain, and also cause cavities. Do not have them too often, and whenever you do, make sure you rinse your mouth.
ADDICTION TROUBLE:
Caffeine can be addictive, whether it’s in tea, coffee or energy drinks. So in case you don’t happen to find one, you could get headaches, become cranky or feel tired for a few days. Parents should definitely discourage younger children from having both, sports as well as energy drinks. What’s more, energy drinks can cause electrolyte abnormalities. So, while it’s a strict no-no for young children, teens involved in sports and physical activities should have it only under supervision.VITAMINS AND AMINO ACIDS:
Energy drinks claim to have vitamins and even amino acids. However it is much cheaper and safer to get from multi-vitamin supplements instead or better follow a well-balanced diet and opt for alter-natives in the form of natural juices. Grapes and Orange juices are good alternatives to replenish the lost electrolytes after physical activity.
GO NATURAL:
Energy drinks should not be confused with sports drinks. The former doesn’t replace water and minerals that one loses when one sweats. In fact, the caffeine can actually make you more dehydrated. Stick to water.
